- CELPIP exam Pattern in Nigeria 2025

The CELPIP exam pattern comprises of four sections, Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The candidates are tested on these four parameters. The Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program. (CELPIP exam) can be given in two formats namely CELPIP General LS and CELPIP General Test.

Candidates should check the requirement of the college/university they are applying to and then prepare accordingly. CELPIP General Test Evaluates test taker’s English speaking, reading, listening, and writing skills and is used for permanent residence applications, professional designation, and by Universities, Colleges and Vocational Programs.

CELPIP General LS Evaluates test taker’s English speaking, and listening skills and is used for citizenship applications.

It is important for candidates looking to score well in their CELPIP Test to understand the CELPIP Exam Pattern and Syllabus in detail. CELPIP Syllabus includes four sections, Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. You get marked on these four sections and you get the CELPIP total score as well. The total score is the sum of the scores in the four skill areas. The total test duration is 3 hours

Listening to a News Item (5 questions)

Listening to a Discussion (8 questions)

Listening to Viewpoints (6 questions)

 Reading

(55–60 minutes)

The reading section consists of different parts that evaluate your comprehension of written materials, including:

Reading Correspondence (11 questions)

Reading to Apply a Diagram (8 questions)

Reading for Information (9 questions)

Reading for Viewpoints (10 questions)

Unscored items may be included.

 Writing

(53–60 minutes)

You will complete two tasks:

Task 1: Write an email (around 150–200 words; typically allotted about 27 minutes).

Task 2: Respond to survey questions (around 150–200 words; typically allotted about 26 minutes).

 Speaking

(15–20 minutes)

The speaking section includes eight tasks that assess your ability to communicate effectively in various everyday situations. Tasks typically involve:

Giving advice

Talking about a personal experience

Describing a scene

Making predictions

Comparing and persuading

Dealing with a difficult situation

Expressing opinions

Describing an unusual situation

Each task comes with a brief preparation period followed by your recorded response.


CELPIP-General LS Exam Pattern


For those taking the CELPIP-General LS (which assesses only Listening and Speaking, primarily for citizenship applications), the pattern is similar for the two components:

- Listening: Same as in the General test.


- Speaking: Same set of tasks as in the General test.
